Opposition forces in Syria have launched a significant offensive in western Aleppo countryside, achieving their most substantial gains in years. Rebel factions, reportedly including groups aligned with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have captured key areas as they push closer to Aleppo city, coming within 15 kilometers of its outskirts.
The coordinated offensive, began weeks ago with smaller skirmishes but escalated dramatically in the last 24 hours. These advances exploit the weakened position of pro-Assad forces following the decapitation of Hezbollah leadership in Syria and instability among Iranian-backed militias.
In retaliation, Assad’s forces, with support from Russian air power, launched heavy bombardments using vacuum missiles and artillery. Strikes have targeted rebel-held positions in Atarib, Darat Izza, and surrounding villages. Despite these countermeasures, the rebels have maintained momentum, reportedly seizing military equipment, including tanks.
As the offensive continues, the potential for further escalation remains high, with Aleppo’s strategic importance drawing significant attention from both sides of the conflict.
