President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering appointing Richard Grenell, former Director of National Intelligence and ambassador to Germany, as a special envoy for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The position, which currently does not exist, would focus on efforts to resolve the ongoing war.

Grenell, known for his diplomatic experience, played key roles during Trump’s first term, including as a special envoy for peace negotiations in Serbia and Kosovo. His potential nomination underscores Trump’s campaign promise to end the conflict, though details on how this would be achieved remain unclear.

Some of Grenell’s past statements, such as advocating for “autonomous regions” in Ukraine and opposing NATO membership for the country in the near future, may raise concerns among Ukrainian leaders. However, his supporters cite his expertise in European affairs as a strong qualification.

Trump’s transition team has not confirmed the appointment, with spokesperson Caroline Leavitt stating that staffing decisions will be announced directly by the president-elect.
