At Jordan’s request, the World Bank extended the “Economic Opportunities for Jordanians and Syrian Refugees” program until the end of 2024.
According to the news of Al-Mamlaka TV, the extension of the agreement was signed by Jean-Christophe Carré, Regional Director of the World Bank’s Levant Department, and Zina Toukan, Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation.
The channel stated that the Jordanian government has offered to extend the program’s spending by one year to $625 million, while the Bank has spent about $386 million on the program since its launch, while the World Bank document did not. indicates acceptance of the proposal to increase spending on the program.
The report noted that the program supports refugees to enter the Jordanian labor market and gain confidence and contribute to the Jordanian economy, while on the one hand, it supports the Jordanian government’s reform agenda to improve the economy. investment climate and sectoral reforms and supporting Jordan in implementing the “five-year reform matrix” and fulfilling its obligations in providing economic opportunities to Syrian refugees.
According to the Jordanian Ministry of Interior, there are more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees in Jordan, a large percentage of whom are not registered with UNHCR.
