US Congressman Joe Wilson, the author and sponsor of the Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act, and Chairman of the Republican Study Committee’s National Security Task Force, told Global Justice Syria News in an exclusive statement that “this law represents a significant blow to the Assad regime and its rogue allies, Generals Putin and the regime in Tehran.”
Wilson, currently in Munich, expressed gratitude “for the tireless efforts of over 50 bipartisan representatives who supported this law and worked diligently to see it succeed in passing, especially my colleagues Representatives Vicente Gonzales, Michael McCaul, Brendan Boyle, French Hill, and Steve Cohen.”
Wilson also extended appreciation to the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its Chairman Michael McCaul for swiftly advancing the law from committee to the floor, adding, “significant credit is due to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise for bringing the law to the table.”
Responding to a question from Global Justice Syria News about the importance and effectiveness of the Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act, Wilson stated, “The value of this legislation is immense. It will ensure robust enforcement of both the Caesar Act sanctions and the new sanctions in this law by requiring regular reporting on cash flows into Syria from countries normalizing relations with the Assad regime.”
Wilson further elaborated that the new law “will also ensure that the United States does not recognize the dictator Assad as the (legitimate) president of Syria. Finally, I hope this law will allow the Syrian people, who are in dire humanitarian need, to receive the humanitarian assistance they desperately need by punishing those who are stealing aid designated for the Syrian people.”
It is worth noting that the US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly days ago on the law introduced by Wilson, with 389 votes in favor and only 32 opposed.
The bill demands that US policy prohibit any official recognition or normalization of relations with any Syrian government led by Bashar al-Assad,” citing the regime’s past and ongoing crimes against the Syrian people. In addition to Washington’s refusal to recognize any other government or normalize relations with the Syrian regime by fully enforcing the sanctions stipulated in the “Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019” and Executive Order 13894, which includes asset freezing and entry bans for some individuals involved in Syria.
For the resolution to become effective, it must be passed by Congress (the House of Representatives and the Senate), and then presented to the office of US President Joe Biden for signature and adoption.
