High clothing prices and lack of purchasing power prompted Syrians in regime-controlled areas to buy used clothing (bales) before Eid al-Fitr or to “recycle” existing ones.
The website “Athar Press” reported that a mother in Damascus told her children that she bought used clothes for the first time after being shocked by the new prices of clothes.
He added that this year, the holiday clothes are beyond the power of the citizens, most families cannot buy clothes for a child, and if there are 3-4 children in the family, the job is even more difficult.
And “for some, the solution is to recycle your brother’s clothes, or maybe take one piece while you get the other, etc.”
The owner of the “Bala” shop described the public’s demand for second-hand clothing as very good in light of the difficult economic conditions.
In contrast, the owner of a women’s clothing store confirmed that there was a class that could buy clothes no matter the price, and a poor group that could not buy anything.
The owner of one of the stores attributed the increase in clothing prices to the increase in the dollar exchange rate, emphasizing that this holiday decreased by 50 percent compared to the previous holiday due to the weak purchasing power of shoppers.
